Although hiring has slowed for many corporations, work
that must be accomplished hasn't reduced. Departments must still deal with new assignments, unexpected workloads, special
projects, vacations and illness leaves of absence.
To maintain flexibility, firms are carefully analyzing their mix
of permanent and temporary employees. They are using temporaries to maintain productivity despite fewer total staff members;
to access skills needed only occasionally; and boost the morale and productivity of hard working permanent employees stretched
thin by heavy workloads. In fact, temporary assignments often become permanent once hiring activity resumes. What can be
better than to try out a future employee?
We find the use of temporaries is growing because there are more highly specialized
and talented professionals available now than ever.
